646 Discussion 3

You should now have some knowledge about and maturity in using PPM tools and you have seen their value. For this Discussion:

  • If you are in the workforce, does your organization leverage enterprise-wide project management tools? What tools are being used? What advantages do you notice from the enterprise wide approach of managing projects and portfolios (over a standalone project management tool approach)?
  • OR….If your organization does not have an enterprise-wide PPM tool, OR, if you’re not yet really embedded in the workforce, describe how your organization (or the organization you aspire to work for) would benefit by investing in such an approach.

In either case…

  • The report linked below describes the leaders in the PPM tool arena. You may use this as one reference but it is suggested to have at least one other.
    • Gartner Magic Quadrant for PPM
    • You may also refer to this “live” site from Gartner to get up-to-date 2021 information.

Pease reply these two students

DC:

Hi All,

Other than Microsoft Project, my company does not currently have enterprise-wide PPM tools/software. While Project is a great software package, I feel the licensed based and per user software limits the natural abilities of my business to share project, program, and portfolio deliverables. One alternative that could centralize the sharing of deliverables would be the utilization of web-based PPM tools. Web-based PPM tools allows businesses the advantage of centrally saving deliverable work, monitor and control processes, and collect information in real-time based on structures knowledge drop sessions (Cline, et al, 2010, pp. 67-68). Such examples of these web-based tools are ProModel and Monday.com. Not only do these web-based software packages allow for centralization and standardization of deliverables, but these tools can also be custom-built to mee individual needs of projects, programs, and portfolios which provides additional benefit over license or server-based tools (Vanguri, & Greenwood, 2004). I would suggest that my organization invest into a web-based PPM tool, or consider upgrading to the cloud-based version of Project.

Further research into Monday.com found this software to be an innovative PPM tool. As defined by Stang, et al (2019), Monday.com is a visionary in the PPM tool industry (p. 26). Monday.com offers a web-based PPM solution that can also be used on mobile devices, inclusion of third parry plugs ins, and is scalable from project to portfolio level (Monday.com 2021). Compared to my company’s version of Project, we are unable to leverage any of these resources (Microsoft.com, 2021). A further comparison of Monday.com and Project show that while the two tools are similar, Monday.com is more innovative, more project/program/portfolio and PMO collaborative friendly, and allows for better collaboration with third-party widgets to increase performance (TechnologyAdvance.com, 2021). While I do enjoy having access to Project, I would feel that on an individual and enterprise level, my company would benefit from a PPM tool such as Monday.com as its innovative approach appears to be more welcoming of collaboration and efficiency than Microsoft’s cash cow, Project.

Do you have any experience with web-based PPM tools? If so, what are your thoughts on enterprise effectiveness?
