Comm Persuasive Speeches And Discussion

I’m working on a communications Discussion and need an explanation to help me study.

persuasive speech #1 and #2-After completing the readings, you are ready to write the general purpose, specific purpose, and central idea for your persuasive speech.

1. What is your persuasive speech topic?
2. Write a general purpose for the topic that you have chosen for your persuasive speech. The general purpose is an infinitive statement. What is the general purpose of the speech you are preparing?
3. Write a specific purpose for the topic that you have chosen for your persuasive speech. According to Lucas, a specific purpose requires you to think in precise terms.
4. Write a central idea for the topic that you have chosen for your persuasive speech. According to Lucas a central idea is a one-sentence statement that sums up or encapsulates the major ideas of a speech. (The central idea must be declarative, complete and written in your own words. The central idea must be not be a phrase or infinitive statement. The central idea must be a statement, not a question. Don’t forget to put the word ‘should’ in the central idea since this is a ‘policy’ speech.
5. What is the problem? What is the cause of the problem? What are the possible solutions?

For this presentation you will be selecting a topic which will lend itself to you introducing a new policy.

Here are some sample central ideas (thesis statements):

Marijuana should be legalized for both medicinal and recreational purposes.

The death penalty should be banned.

Gay marriage should be legalized in all 50 states of the US.

The drinking age should be changed to 18 in California.

The driving age should be changed to 14 in California.

A new training program should be created to help parents decide which video games they should and should not allow their children to play.

More facilities should be built in California to help teens and young adults with addiction problems get clean /sober.
