Chapter 8: Effective Listening in Interpersonal RelationshipsOverview
The chapter defines listening
. The content identifies elements of the listening process. The importance of listening is highlighted. fDifferent types of listening is explored In addition a discussion of the relationship between listening and critical thinking is presented. An examination of obstacles to effective listening help clarify the topic.
Objectives
- To define effective listening
- To identify elements of the listening process
- To discuss different types of listening
- To explore the relationship between critical thinking and effective listening
Defining Listening
Listening means making a conscious effort to hear the sounds of life. In communication, listening is a cornerstone of the process. As human beings enter the world, sound is one dimension of life that helps to explain the world. Sounds
are vibrations that travel through air, water, or some other medium. Humans experience sound primarily through the ears.
Importance of Listening
Listening is a vital part of communicating. The University of Missouri Extension and Agricultural Information Office in an article entitled, “Listening Our Most Used Communication Skill,” the authors Dick Lee and Delmar Hatesohl wrote:
“Listening is the communication skill most of us use the most frequently. Various studies stress the importance of listening as a communication skill. A typical study points out that many of us spend 70 to 80 percent of waking hours in some form of communication. Of that time we spend about 9 percent writing, 16 percent reading, 30 percent speaking and 45 percent listening. Studies confirm that most of us are poor and inefficient listeners.” (Web August 12, 2012)
Difference between Listening and Hearing
There is a difference between listening and hearing. Hearing implies
the physical ability to receive sound waves. When a person has hearing problems it causes issues in the communication process. Listening refers to the ability to hear the sound waves and to engage in thinking processes related to the sounds. Listening implies interpreting and understanding sound stimuli.

Different Types of Listening
The Communication Scholar Stephen B. Lucas, in the text The Art of Public Speaking describes four types of listening:
Appreciative Listening
: Listening for pleasure or enjoyment.
Example: Listening to music
Empathetic Listening
: Listening to provide emotional support
Example: A friend shares a personal problem
Comprehensive Listening
: Focus on understanding the speaker’s message
Example: Listening to a lecture.
Critical Listening
: Evaluating a message as either positive or negative
Example: Listening to a speech on racism
Dimensions of Sound
In the book, Medicine Cards: The Discovery of Power Through the Ways of Animals, Jamie Sams and David Carson relate the concept of sound to dolphins. “Dolphin was given the gift of the primordial tongue. Dolphin learned that all communication was pattern and rhythm, and that the new aspect of communication was sound.” (p. 198)
The idea of sound in all the elements of life is evident. There is a vast communication network that uses sound rather than words, even among humans, for instance, the beating of drums, sirens screeching, bells tolling, and the symphonies of nature. (The Thirteen Original Clan Mothers p. 108).
Variations of Listening
Listening, the act of perceiving the world of sound, surrounds people. In urban environments the sounds of airplanes, freeways, sirens, fog horns, different music, multiple languages is contrasted by the sounds of birds chirping, the roar of the ocean, the crackle of wind blowing through the trees, or the quietness of early morning are various aspects of listening. Listening, like everything else in life is diverse and occurs in different dimensions and in different ways.
In the book, The Thirteen Original Clan Mothers, Jamie Sams explains, “Tiyoweh, is the Seneca Native American tradition of Entering the Silence.” She writes,
“Listening Woman is the Clan Mother of Tiyoweh, the Stillness… Her Cycle of Truth is hearing the truth. This Clan Mother teaches us how to enter the Silence and how to listen to the ever-present messages of nature, our hearts, the Spirit World, the views of other humans, the Creature-teachers.”
A lot can be learned from tuning in and listening to the varied sounds of life.
Everyday Listening
In ordinary daily communication, the act of listening often appears as subtle. That is listening, is often viewed as a passive process. The fact that one is using mental and physical energy make listening an active process. Have you ever had a conversation with a friend and found yourself totally exhausted after the conversation?
Using the mind and body to listen can be an easy going fun experience also. Listening to the stories of great storytellers, hearing a favorite piece of music, or a radio program, or television show, or a movie can bring many rewards. At the same time this listening process can be exhausting. Hearing the daily news, or depressing circumstances of people can be tiring because mental and physical energy is being used.
Elements of the Listening Process
Hearing: Being able to physically receive sound waves
Focusing: Turning your attention toward the sounds
Understanding: Organizing the sounds in a way that makes sense to you
Feedback: Giving verbal and non-verbal during conversation
Recall: remember what the sounds revealed.

Obstacles to Effective Listening
Becoming familiar with the things that hinder listening, can enhance ability to listen more effectively. One obstacle to effective listening, is message overload. We can multi task, but it does not necessarily mean effective listening. Individuals can listen to a variety of stimuli simultaneously. For example, one can listen to the radio, while having a conversation on the phone with a friend. One researcher stated,
“…Its’s ironic that ever-growing piles of data and information do not equate to greater knowledge and better decision making. What’s remarkable is just “how little this has affected the quality of our thinking.”

A second obstacle to effective listening is the fact that many people have hearing problems. There is so much noise pollution that causes hearing loss. Millions of people suffer from hearing loss, including five million school age children. The increasing number of people with hearing problems and the increasing complexity of the problems are a clear indication that much of what is being communicated through sound is not being received.

A third obstacle to effective listening is the fact that human beings have different levels of thinking abilities. Since effective listening is closely related to critical thinking and comprehensive thinking skills, it is not the subject of common exploration. The art of thinking is not making the headlines.
“We’re exposed to (greater amounts of) poor yet charismatic thinking, the fads of intellectual fashion, opinion and mere assertions. The wealth of communication and information can easily overwhelm our reasoning abilities. What’s remarkable is just “how little this has affected the quality of our thinking.”
Are We Losing Our Ability to Think Critically? | July 2009 | Communications of the ACM
A forth obstacle to effective listening is the fact that there is limited training for listening skills. Listening is so much a part of the communication process that its taken for granted. People assume they know how to listen, when in fact that is often not the case. Since there is not much training in listening skills, many people do not have the ability to listen effectively. The most training people get is from parents who say, “Shut up and listen.”
A fifth obstacle to effective listening is linguistic diversity. As discussed in the chapter on language, there are many languages spoken in the world. Different languages, different accents, different interpretations of words complicate the listening process.

Gender and Listening
Women and men are similar in many ways. Essentially, everyone wants to be loved, understood, and heard accurately. At the same time women and men are different in many ways.
Researchers Canary and Hause found that men and women listen for different reasons. They concluded,
“When men and women listen, they do so for different reasons. They also seek different information from the speaker; men focus on the facts when women focus on ‘the mood of the communication.’ The same researchers found that women communicate more information than men because they want the other person to understand. According to these authors, men viewed the more information as a waste of time and would therefore, not listen carefully.” (barriers+to+effective+listening#id=1&vid=608cbb0c4e8f405117c45502d6a6a79f&action)
