Observing Play

Directions: Before viewing two (2) of the Observation Videos below review, The Importance of Play in Chapter 2 and The Cycle for Curriculum Planning in Chapter 3. View two (2) of the Observation Videos listed below and then write a paper that summarize what you viewed; and addresses the questions below:

  • What developmental skill does the child/children appear to be working on?
  • What stages or types of play are the child/children engaging in?
  • Do the actions of the other children and or adults who interact with the child affect the outcomes of the child’s experience? How so?
  • Do you see anything the teacher could do to extend the child’s learning?
  • Do you see any changes needed to be made in the environment?

Each summary will be at least one page (one page for each summary) in an essay format.

Standard Guideline: Typed, Font Times New Roman or Arial, Size 11/12 Font, double spaced. Check for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Use APA style when citing references.

3- Teacher Interview

Directions: Interview a teacher (due to COVID-19, this interview can be conducted telephonically) from an early childhood program (Montessori, Head Start, State Preschool, accredited Child Care Center, or certified Family Child Care Home). Ask the teacher the following:

  • Describe the philosophy of the school/program where they work
  • How often do they conduct observations, and how do they use in the program?
  • What curriculum model or approach they use to plan experiences for children?

Remember to note in your paper the name and the location of the program/facility that the person works at. The teacher’s first name and initial of last name and the date of the interview.
