Reasons Why Students Plagiarize
Question 1
Compiling one’s own ideas while presenting them as an effective summary and integrating the source materials pose a challenge for many students. Most students may plagiarize their work due to reasons like laziness, lack of confidence, and because they are still learning how to avoid plagiarism. Some students are lazy to put any effort into their studies, making them look for an easy way out of assignments leading to plagiarism. For a student to develop their own ideas, confidence is significant. Therefore, a lack of confidence amongst the students tempts them to borrow words from an author who they think has captured their thoughts in a better way. Clearly states, “Students may not be familiar with the jargon that’s used in some academic areas that are new to them” (Clearly, 2017, p. 68). Through learning and understanding how to deliberate and articulate their arguments in their field, students are still learning that to borrow ideas without plagiarism, one needs to digest and evaluate source materials rather than paraphrasing.
To avoid plagiarism, teachers can come up with strategies to help students understand the importance of avoiding plagiarism. Teachers can work with their classes on evaluation and summarizing of the source materials used for notes. Students practicing as they take notes becomes a guide in future as they handle their assignments. As the students learn, discussing and ensuring that they understand citing the procedures and the reasons for citing is an important strategy to avoid copying another writer’s work. Students can learn strategies for organizing their lecture notes, which they can employ in completing assignments. Building students’ confidence by acknowledging their expertise in different fields enables them to grow their ideas after reading a source rather than copying the information presented (Cleary, 2017). The article is informative, highlighting lack of confidence, laziness, and they are learning as some of the sources students plagiarize (Clearly, 2017).
