Branching paths: Creating an Ambidextrous Organization

This article showcases the potential and capacity of big companies that can lead innovation through exploitation and exploration. The core objective of this article is to run and operate it currently efficiently while searching for new growth opportunities. It focuses more on expeditiously dealing with all the challenges effectively to derive new techniques and growth avenues to meet the ever-growing landscape of customer needs and preferences (Peter, 2012). For the most part, this article showcases the ability of big organizations to retain two opposing ideas while still undertaking the core functions. With a significant percentage of the content geared towards familiarization ambidexterity, the article highlights ambidextrous companies such as Ciba-Geigys.  This article lays a firm foundation on the components, elements, and features that allow these organizations to exploit and explore efficiently.

Despite the two elements of strategic innovation, this article introduces a new aspect; aspiration. Ciba –Geigy achieved its two opposing goals by setting an understandable “overarching aspiration.” Through this, the leadership team of exploitation and exploration could conduct both activities with a solid understanding of the expected outcome. Traditionally business leaders should derive inspiration that communicates the basis for action to all people engaging in both activities precisely with precise projections about the expected outcomes. From this perspective, it is of paramount importance for the ambidextrous organization to develop understandable aspirations to drive its strategic innovation.

Ciba – Geigly implemented an incentive system to boost the morale and synergy of the teams involved. Although this work system is controversial in ambidexterity, it helped the company achieve parity between the two opposing elements. All the teams worked collaboratively to ensure there were making profits following the projected outcome. The success of the organization depended on the ability of all the teams to achieve their set targets. In today’s contemporary business world, leaders need resources such as customers, brands, and distribution channels to foster exploration while leveraging exploitation and vice versa (Peter, 2012). Furthermore, the team’s proposed ambidextrous plan must operate with different critical tasks, structures, competencies, leadership roles, rewards, and strategic intent.

This article gives a comprehensive outline of exploit and explores the two significant elements of strategic innovation. On the one hand, explore unit focuses on the growth and innovation index while the exploit function relies more on the profits and cost. Exploration is the mother of all inventions. In surmise, the article emphasizes the essence of collaboration between the exploration and exploitation division to reduce tension between the two units.
