Monitoring ofhate sites in my opinion should be allowed to an extent. Gun rights aremonitored for background and mental health issues to allow for safety whenselling and/or buying firearms in hopes of keeping guns out of the hands ofdangerous or harmful people. Hate can be used as a very dangerous ammunitionthat can result in death of an individual or group. Monitoring does not have tomean total exposure or access to a hate site however keeping even one humanbeing safe should be the main priority. In today’s technological world it seemsto me that a system could be put in place to red flag certain wording or poststo determine if a life is at risk of being taken. We can argue free speechuntil there is no breath left in us however how important is free speech ifyou, your loved one or someone special to you were targeted for a hate crimeand if that hate crime turned out to take the life of that loved one, would youstill think monitoring of a hate site infringed upon freedom of speech?
Our rights arepart of our heritage and they should be honored however I am torn between therights established centuries ago and the modern technological world of todaywere crime happens quick, cruel and without rhyme or reason at an astoundingrate every minute of every day. I greatly appreciate our freedom of speech butI also greatly appreciate safety from cruel hate crimes.
Winnie Hu (2010)reports that if the students involved in the Tyler Clementi suicide were to beconvicted of a hate crime they could serve up to 10 years in prison. Nomonitoring of hate sites, takes the living life of individuals and groups andalso takes the freedom of the criminal committing the crime.
