What are the unique ecological issues that subsistence marketplaces face?
The unique ecological issues that subsistence marketplaces face include air, noise, water pollution, deforestation, and excess greenhouse gas emissions. “In subsistence marketplaces, environmental issues are not abstract; they hit home at a local level. For example, local water supplies to households are contaminated, and sewages are often blocked by people using and disposing of plastic bags, resulting in disease spreading” (Madhu, 2007).
How does this affect the daily lives of people living in subsistence?
“Environmental degradation has a direct impact on health, quality of life, and a host of other issues related to basic physical survival” (Madhu, 2013). Individual households have difficulty living in a poor infrastructure to cater to their basic human and environmental needs. Poor sanitation, contaminated drinking water, and improper waste disposal directly negatively impact the local and societal marketplaces, creating an ecological menace that is a significant threat to public health. As a result, individual households living in these areas led to sustainable practices as coping mechanisms to survive in the region (Madhu, 2013). Gardening own produce, reusing products, reducing consumer intake has become a critical part of personal growth and a way to interact with the people committed to better their daily lives.
How are they similar or different to ecological issues in affluent markets?
Subsistence and affluent present some similarities in regards to ecological issues. Lack of proper government sanctions and failure to adhere to corporate social responsibility, high consumerism in affluent markets negatively impacts air pollution. However, affluent markets have access to resources and education to promote healthy cautious business and participate in social initiatives that pressure Governments and corporations to action.
What are some directions to take to find solutions for subsistence marketplaces?
In regards to solutions, the burden should lie on corporations, government, and consumer docket. As far as consumers are concerned, they should maintain the sustainable practices of reducing consumption, reusing, and cross-using where applicable. Similarly, producers/corporations should be actively involved in sustainable production, reduce overproduction, and improve filtering and recycling practices and other knowledge to do more with less. Besides, all members should subscribe to the give and take approach to become more environmentally cautious through tree planting to mitigate deforestation and the overall general care for existing forest cover (Madhu and Rosa, 2007). Furthermore, with the continuous advancement in technology, all parties should continue to search for solutions in all areas of life where subsistence marketplaces lead to conflict between economic activities and ecology such as oven produce smoke or cooking using wood. Lastly, this area is ripe for research and education for all parties involved to achieve successful sustainable marketplaces.
