Summary, Direct Quote and Summary

Summarizing, quoting, and paraphrasing are the key ways of incorporating other people’s works in your own writing to ensure that despite the closeness, the work differs from the cited work. Although these three forms are similar, their method of incorporation into one’s work is different. A direct quote is an excerpt of the source, which is entirely identical to the original content being cited. This entails copying directly from the source document word for word (Purdue University, 2020). However, quotation marks are included at the beginning and end of the content being quoted, followed by an in-text citation of the source being quoted. For example, Lauerman and Griffin (2020) states, “Societies, businesses and economies have all suffered as people have sequestered themselves to prevent the spread of the virus and inundation of health systems with severely ill patients.”

As opposed to direct quotation, a paraphrase entails presenting another writer’s ideas in your own words (Purdue University, 2020). However, the paraphrased content should also be attributed to the original author. Because the content is presented in different words, it is slightly condensed and shorter than the original version. Using a similar example, a paraphrase would appear as follows. Most people have chosen seclusion to stop the spread of the virus and the overwhelming of the health system, which has made businesses, societies, and economies suffer (Lauerman & Griffin, 2020).

Summarizing is slightly different from the other two methods. A summary presents the source’s main points only. Although you present the information in your own ideas, it is important to cite the original source (Purdue University, 2020). Summaries are often shorter than the original source and provide a broad overview of the source. Using the same example, a summary is shown below. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected economies, businesses and societies all over the world, as people opt for seclusion to avoid contracting the virus (Lauerman & Griffin, 2020). Therefore, although the method of application differs, the overall objective is to incorporate other’s people work in your writing correctly without plagiarism.
